One of my new favorites... I just love everything about this song! The lyrics, the drums, the instrumentation, the singer, the build up... everything! Take a listen, and then let's dive into its incredibly comforting meaning!
Both of my kids are terrified of the dark, my son especially. He used to wake up with full body shakes because it was too dark in his room, and he was scared. Now, he sleeps with a lamp on. I think from an early age, God shows us that light destroys darkness. Throughout the Bible, Jesus is referred to as the Light of the world very often.
"The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned." (Isaiah 9:2)
"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all." 1 John 1:5
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5
God sent His own Son to earth in order to destroy sin (darkness). Jesus gave His own life up for us on the cross, defeating death, sin & darkness. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16 How great is God's love!
This song mentions God's great love over 27 times, whereas the Bible mentions the great love of God too many times to count. (Numbers 14:19, Nehemiah 13:22, Lamentations 3:32, Psalm 5:7, Psalm 17:7, Psalm 25:6, Psalm 86:13, Psalm 89:1, Psalm 103:11, Psalm 108:4 & Psalm 117:2, 1 John 3:1 just to name a few!) "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved" Ephesians 2:4-6.
God loves us so much that He promises to take us to our eternal home after our time on earth is done. "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Philippians 3:20, 21 Jesus took all our sins, and endured the wrath of God for us, so we can one day join Him in heaven. What amazing love! As Charles Wesley writes: "Amazing love, how can it be? That Thou my God should die for me?"
Let His amazing, GREAT love be a constant comfort to you. You are loved. Loved by a God who sent his one and only son to die in our place, so we may one day live with Him. Let the following verse and song be a constant reminder to the great love that God has for us!
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" Romans 8:37-39
